In the face of global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and social inequality, the world is called upon to not only focus on economic development but also ensure that human well-being and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. This is the spirit behind the theme “Nurturing People and Nature“, which lies at the core of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a set of 17 global goals agreed upon by UN member states to be achieved by 2030. These goals encompass various important aspects of life, ranging from poverty alleviation, quality education, gender equality, to action against climate change and the protection of terrestrial and marine ecosystems. However, the success of the SDGs is not solely measured by numerical achievements and indicators. What is more important is how we foster a harmonious relationship between humans and nature — nurturing, not just “managing.”
Supporting people means providing equal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Empowering local communities, eliminating discrimination, and protecting vulnerable groups are the foundations for building a resilient and inclusive society. SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and SDG 4 (Quality Education) serve as the initial steps in ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to reach their full potential. Nature provides everything we need — air, water, food, energy, and ecological balance. Unfortunately, excessive exploitation and climate change have threatened the sustainability of these resources.
SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land)
urge us to take concrete actions to restore and protect nature. Planting trees, reducing waste, using renewable energy, and adopting a more environmentally conscious lifestyle are all part of “nurturing nature.” Building a sustainable future is not about choosing between human development or environmental preservation.
We need both. When people are healthy and well-educated, they are more likely to make responsible choices for the environment. Conversely, when nature is protected, it will continue to provide the basic needs for current and future generations. Every individual, community, and institution has a vital role to play. From government policies, to green business strategies, to personal lifestyle changes all contributions are needed to create a truly nurturing world.
